Reading the Game: How Watching Padel Improves Your Play
Live and televised padel is a free coaching resource. Here is how to watch with intent.
Most amateur players watch padel for entertainment. The best amateur players watch it as study. The difference is enormous.
Watch One Player
Follow a single player through an entire game rather than watching the ball. You will see things you have never noticed — split-step timing, recovery footwork, anticipation cues.
Notice the Pre-Shot Movement
The ball is only half the story. The work pros do between shots — adjusting position, communicating with partners, balancing weight — is what separates them from amateurs.
Track Shot Selection
Note what shot the pros choose in each situation. Why did they lob there instead of drive? Why did they chiquita instead of trying a winner? Their decisions become a tactical playbook for your own game.
Listen for Communication
Watch how often partners talk. Even at world-class level, communication is constant — calls of "mine", "yours", "switch", "lob coming". Apply this to your own play immediately.
Study the Defence
Amateur players often stop watching when their team is on the defensive. The pros are at their most instructive in defensive positions — managing the wall, neutralising attacks, working their way back into the point.
Pause and Rewind
If you are watching recorded matches, use the pause button. Stop on a serve and predict the return location. Stop on a smash and predict where it will be aimed. Build your prediction skills consciously.
A Weekly Habit
Thirty minutes of focused viewing per week, applied consistently, will measurably improve your game within months. Pair it with regular play and your improvement will compound.
