Padel Tournament Formats Explained
Round robins, americanos, mexicanos and king of the court — a guide to the formats that power great padel events.
Tournament formats shape the entire experience of a padel event — how often you play, who you play with, and how competitive things feel. Here is a practical breakdown of the formats you are most likely to encounter.
Round Robin
Fixed pairs play every other pair in a group. Simple, fair and ideal for league play. The downside is that a weak partner pairing can derail your day.
Americano
Partners rotate every round. You play with everyone, against everyone, and points are tallied individually. Perfect for mixed-ability groups and the format we favour for networking events.
Mexicano
Like an Americano, but pairings each round are determined by current standings — top players play together, bottom players together. Rewards consistency and creates dramatic late-round matches.
King of the Court
Winners stay on, losers rotate. Fast, social and brilliant for short sessions. Less suited to long events as the strongest players hog court time.
Knockout
Classic single-elimination bracket. High stakes, high drama. Best when you have a defined competitive cohort and time for finals.
Choosing the Right Format
For a corporate or networking session, an Americano almost always wins. For a club championship, a group stage followed by knockouts works well. Match the format to the goal of the event.
