A tiny hop that makes every shot easier. Here's how to time it.
Why the split step matters
Every good return starts before the ball reaches you. The split step — a small, balanced hop as your opponent strikes — loads your legs so you can push off in any direction.
Timing it
Land just as the ball leaves their racket. Too early and you're flat-footed; too late and you're still in the air when you need to move.
Practise it
During warm-ups, say "hop" out loud each time your partner hits. It feels silly for five minutes and becomes automatic within a few sessions.
The payoff
You'll reach more balls, arrive balanced and hit cleaner shots — without getting any faster.
