Playing the Middle: The Simplest Way to Win More Points
One tactical change that reliably improves results at every level.
If you want a single tactical adjustment that pays off immediately, hit more balls down the middle.
Why It Works
The middle creates hesitation. Two players both think the other will take it, or both go for it. Either way, the shot that comes back is usually weak.
The Angles Are Safer
Down-the-line and cross-court winners have very little margin. The middle has the lowest net height and the most court behind it, so your error rate drops.
Against Mixed Pairs
When one opponent is clearly stronger, the middle forces an awkward negotiation between them. It is far more effective than repeatedly targeting the weaker player, which they will simply adapt to.
Use It on Volleys
Middle volleys at the feet are among the highest-percentage shots in padel. Deep, low, central — then wait for the lob or the pop-up.
Do Not Be Predictable
Mix in the occasional wide ball so they cannot cheat towards the centre. The middle is your default, not your only option.
Defend the Middle Too
If it works for you, it works against you. Agree with your partner who takes it before the point starts.
