Footwork Fundamentals: Moving Better on a Small Court

You do not need to be fast. You need to be in the right place, early.

The padel court is small, which fools players into thinking movement does not matter. In reality, poor footwork is the most common cause of weak shots.

The Split-Step

Small hop as your opponent strikes the ball, landing as they make contact. It resets your balance and lets you move in any direction. Almost nobody at club level does this consistently.

Side-On, Always

Turn your shoulders early. Getting side-on before the ball arrives makes every shot cleaner, especially off the glass.

Small Steps Near the Ball

Big steps get you into the area. Small adjusting steps get you into position. Most mishits are the result of skipping the second part.

Moving Off the Glass

Step back with the ball, not towards it. Let it come off the wall and drop into your strike zone.

Moving as a Pair

Your partner''s position dictates yours. Move up, back and across together — think of an invisible rope between you.

Simple Drill

Play a set where you must call "split" out loud every time your opponent hits. It feels ridiculous and it works.
