Padel Court Surfaces Explained: What You Need to Know

Artificial turf, concrete, glass walls — understanding court surfaces helps you adapt your game and choose the right footwear.

Not all padel courts are created equal. The surface beneath your feet and the walls around you have a significant impact on how the game plays.

Artificial Turf

The vast majority of padel courts in the UK use artificial turf infilled with sand or rubber granules. This surface provides excellent grip, cushions impact on joints and creates a consistent bounce. The turf is designed to be slightly abrasive, which is why proper padel or clay-court shoes with herringbone soles are essential.

Concrete

Some older or outdoor courts use a painted concrete surface. Concrete courts play faster, with a lower, quicker bounce. They are harder on the joints but require less maintenance. Concrete courts can be slippery when wet, making them more suited to covered or indoor settings.

Glass Walls

The back walls of a padel court are typically made of tempered glass, providing excellent visibility for spectators and consistent ball rebound. The ball comes off glass quickly and predictably, which is why reading the bounce becomes intuitive with practice.

Mesh Fencing

The upper portions of the walls and side sections use metallic mesh. The ball loses significant pace when hitting the mesh, creating a dead, unpredictable bounce. This is why shots that clip the mesh can be so difficult to handle.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Indoor courts offer consistent conditions — no wind, no rain, controlled temperature. Outdoor courts introduce environmental variables that add another dimension to the game. Wind affects lobs dramatically, and moisture can make the turf surface faster.

Court Maintenance

Well-maintained courts have evenly distributed sand infill and clean, undamaged turf. Patchy or worn courts can create inconsistent bounces and increased injury risk. When choosing a club, the quality of court maintenance is a reliable indicator of overall standards.

Adapting Your Game

On faster surfaces, shorten your backswing and focus on control. On slower surfaces, you can afford to be more aggressive. On outdoor courts, adjust your lob height for wind conditions and be prepared for the ball to skid on damp turf.
