The Bandeja: Your First Real Defensive Overhead
Why the bandeja keeps you at the net and how to build a reliable one.
The bandeja is the shot that separates players who hold the net from players who get lobbed back to the fence.
What It Actually Is
A controlled, sliced overhead played at shoulder height. It is not a smash. Its job is to keep you at the net, not to win the point.
Turn Sideways Early
The moment you read the lob, turn your shoulders and move back sideways. Facing the net and backpedalling is how people lose balance.
Contact Point
Hit it in front and at shoulder height, arm extended but relaxed. Too high and you lose the slice; too low and it sits up.
Slice Through the Ball
Brush from high to low, finishing across your body. The slice keeps the ball low after the bounce and buys you time to reset.
Aim Down the Line
The down-the-line bandeja is the percentage choice — it keeps the ball away from the middle and stops the counter-lob.
Recover Forwards
Play the shot, then step back to the net immediately. A bandeja followed by standing still is a wasted shot.
Practice Pattern
Have a partner feed ten lobs in a row while you play only bandejas. Ten a week for a month changes your net game.
