How to Improve Your Padel Serve: Tips from the Pros

The serve might be underarm, but that does not mean it cannot be a weapon. Here's how to make yours count.

The padel serve is often dismissed as a formality, but at higher levels, it is a genuine tactical weapon. Here is how to elevate your serve from functional to formidable.

The Basics

The ball must be served underarm, struck at or below waist height. You must bounce the ball before hitting it, and the serve must land in the diagonally opposite service box. After bouncing, the ball may hit the back wall but must not hit the side wall before the opponent plays it.

Placement Over Power

The most effective padel serves are not the hardest — they are the best placed. Target the corners of the service box, aiming to make the ball bounce awkwardly off the side wall or back wall.

The Body Serve

Serving directly at your opponent's body limits their shot options. They must make a hurried decision about whether to play forehand or backhand, often resulting in a weak return.

Spin Variations

Slice — A side-spin serve that kicks off the side wall, pulling your opponent wide and opening up the court.

Topspin — A serve that dips quickly after crossing the net and kicks up off the bounce, pushing your opponent deep.

Flat — A pace serve aimed deep at the body or into the corner. Less spin but more urgency.

Consistency

A second serve that finds the box consistently is worth more than a first serve that misses half the time. Develop a reliable second serve that you trust under pressure, then build your first serve around that foundation.

Tactical Awareness

Vary your serve constantly. If your opponent is standing close to the side wall, serve to their body. If they are anticipating a wide serve, go down the centre. The element of surprise is your greatest asset.

Practice Routine

Spend 10 minutes of each session practising your serve. Set targets in the service box — a water bottle in each corner — and aim for them. Track your accuracy and watch it improve over time.
